Dear Friend,

What if you were living on borrowed time?

Amanda Keys is fighting for her life. She was diagnosed with congenital heart disease when she was only 6 months old and has struggled with health problems her entire life.  Her sister suffers from the same disease.  Amanda's doctors say a heart transplant is her only hope for a second chance at life, and she is on the waiting list at Children's Hospital of Michigan.

Despite her struggles, 23 year old Amanda is optimistic about the future and looks forward to the lifesaving transplant that will allow her to have a normal lifestyle.  She loves to spend time with her nephew and two nieces and hopes that one day she'll be able to run and play with them without feeling so exhausted.  But first she needs your help.

Unfortunately, Amanda's hope for a new life comes at a very high price.

A heart transplant costs approximately $750,000 and that's only the beginning.  Even with medical coverage, Amanda faces significant expenses.  For the rest of her life, she will need followu p care and daily anti-rejection medication  The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000-$5,000 per month-and they are as critical to her survival as the tranpslant itself.

Amanda's declining health prevents her from working, adding to her financial strain.  She has health insurance under her father's plan, but she will lose coverage when she turns 25. She will also incur travel expenses for the 60 mile trips to the hospital for appointments before and after her transplant.

What if your life depended on the cmopassion and generosity of others?

The National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) is working with volunteers and supporters to help relieve the growing burden of expenses for Amanda and her family. NFT has been assisting transplant patients with advocacy and fundraising support for 26 years.  Your gift-of $25, $50, $100 or more-will enable NFT to provide Amanda with the financial support she desperately needs.

You can help in the following ways:

  • Visit www.transplants.org to make a secure online donation.  Click on Patients We Help and search for Amanda Keys.
  • Contact Tom Bergeron at 734-934-6557 for additional donating opportunities.

If you have any questions about NFT, feel free to contact the NFT staff at 800-489-3863.

PS,  What if Amanda were your daughter? Your granddaughter? Your sister?
