Lakes of Taylor Golf Course

Superintendent's Corner
APRIL 2008

Welcome back for another year here at the Taylor golf courses!  We are looking forward to providing you the best possible playing conditions on a daily basis.

We realize there have been some concerns in years past over the bunker playability.  Remember, bunkers are hazards and will always be hazards.  It is nearly impossible to keep all bunkers playing with the same consistency.  Factors affecting bunker conditions is irrigation water, rain, wind, and shot making (displacement of sand).  Both courses are in the process of renovating the remaining bunkers at their facilities.  We are confident that this will help with the overall consistency and playability throughout both courses.  We hope to complete the bunker renovations, weather permitting, by the end of May.

Greens aerification will be done at both properties in early April.  Meadows will be done April 6-8th weather permitting and Lakes will be done April 13-15th weather permitting.  We realize that aerification causes disruption on the putting surfaces, but it is of great importance that this process takes place.  The reason for aerification is to increase overall health of greens throughout the growing season.  Aerification allows for gas exchange and water infiltration throughout the soil profile, which aides in root development and overall health.  If we do not aerify the greens become compacted and “weak”.  Aerification helps control thatch build-up and helps provide for a firmer and faster putting surface.  It is vital to plant health to open up these channels for growth.  The aerification holes will be filled with topdressing sand following aerification.  We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but we hope you understand the importance of this cultural practice.  We have yet to hear from a golfer who enjoys playing on aerified greens, but it is a vital practice to provide best possible putting surfaces throughout the season.

This past fall new cart paths were installed at Taylor Meadows.  There will be a lot of restoration work done along the edges of the paths, so please be patient.  We will plan to have these seeded by the end of April.

We look forward to another golf season at the Taylor courses.  Hope to see you on the links!

Home lawn tip:
Apply your pre-emergent crabgrass control by the 3rd week of April.

Sincerely,
