The air was cool, but the competition was smokin’ hot.

On October 5th and 6th, Taylor Meadows Golf Club held its 16th annual Senior Appreciation Day golf outings.

Each day brought 144 downriver-area golfers ages 55 and up, to the first of the two Taylor golf courses. The tournament format was a two-person scramble among three divisions: Ladies, Men, and a Mixed division.

Of the 288 total players, 32% were residents of Taylor, with the rest of the crowd hailing anywhere from Dearborn Heights to Sterling Heights.

“This event is truly our way to show our seniors how much they are valued,” said Jeff Sovitch, Operations Manager at the Meadows. For less than forty dollars, each team played eighteen holes of golf with a cart, which was followed by an awards ceremony, and dinner at the Greenside Grille. Scott Hunt, Supervisor for the course added that, “it’s always nice to see so many regulars all together between the two days for an event that’s meant to be fun.”

While both mornings began with an ominous look in the sky above, they turned out to be rather mild, compared to the forecasted weather. Hunt noted that while the weather was not dictated by the golf course, many of the players showed their gratitude.

The winner of the Men’s division on day one was determined by a scorecard playoff, in which the tie was broken by a regressive check of the hardest handicapped holes. A birdie on the toughest hole, number seven at Taylor Meadows, yielded victory for Jimmy Attee and Ted Berle, who won with a seven-under-par score of 64.

Taking the Monday Ladies’ division with a (+3) 74 were Marge Renko and           Sharron Giboratz. The Mixed division winners were Bill and Kathy Herrick, who entered the clubhouse with a (+8) score of 79.

Tuesday morning’s tee sheet featured another 144 players, one of whom made light work of 281 yard par four, number nine. Jack Stewart, of Taylor, holed a 50 yard pitch from the fairway to give his team a birdie, in front of several on-looking competitors.

Mike Jarvi, an Outing Coordinator at Taylor Meadows witnessed the exciting shot first-hand. “It was the best shot I saw all day,” remarked Jarvi, “quite frankly, one of the best I’ve seen on that hole.”

Highlight reel-worthy shots aside, Tuesday’s—and overall—champions of the Men’s division were Pat Frame and Dave Baker, finishing the round with an impressive (-9) 62. Tuesday Mixed division winners with an even par score of 71 were Robert and Roberta Tremmell. And the winning scorecard for the Ladies’ was turned in by Patte Stevens and Pat Yacuoune, who shot a 90.

The 18th annual Senior Appreciation Outing was a success: the weather cooperated and a good time was had by all. “It’s a fun send-off for the end of the year,” said Scott Hunt, “so many players came up to me, saying how much they enjoy the event and look forward to it each year.”
