SENIOR APPRECIATION DAYS
TOURNAMENT RESULTS
As the sun rose above the horizon on the chilly morning of October 4th, the dedicated golfers left the heated interiors of their vehicles and carried their clubs toward the cart staging area at Taylor Meadows. Once inside, steaming coffee flowed from the snack bar like hobos to a bread line. When the shotgun blasted at 10 o’clock, the 20th annual Senior Appreciation Championship was underway and the carts were a-rollin’ down the fairways.
Overall Champs, Dave Baker and Pat Frame
The Senior Appreciation Championship is a two-day annual event, hosted by Taylor Meadows Golf Club—each day fielding 144 golfers playing in two-person teams. The two-man, two-lady, or mixed teams play in a scramble format, where each team receives a team score, with both shots played from where the better ball lands.
The competition was close, both Monday and Tuesday, with some names reminiscent of last year’s tournament.
The Monday mixed division was won with an even-par score of 71, by Bob and Robbie Tremmel, who won the mixed division outright last year with an identical score. Their par shooting wouldn’t be enough, however, to remain the overall champions. The following day, Sue and Chris Matusky of Woodhaven entered the clubhouse with a staggering (-4) score of 67 to win the title of overall mixed division champions for 2010.
The women’s division saw a similar upset, with the 2009 champions finishing two strokes behind this year’s winners. Bette Muzzin of Riverview and Dayle Garrett of Dearborn shot 83 on Monday, enough to beat the Tuesday score of 85. That scorecard was turned in by Marge Renko and Sharon Gibaratz, both of Brownstown, who last year won the women’s division with a (+8) 79.
The overall winners of the men’s division and two-year champions were Pat Frame and Dave Baker, who finished with a (-7) 64. The runners-up were Phil Attee and Guy Delguice, who won the Tuesday men’s group only one stroke behind Baker and Frame, at (-6). Attee and Delguice beat out Jim Attee (Phil’s brother) and Ted Berce in a scorecard playoff with a birdie on the toughest hole at Meadows, the par-5 number seven.
Apart from the stiff competition, the players all enjoyed a generous buffet-dinner, complete with dessert, following their rounds—as well as ½ off menu items in the snack bar during the event. To get all that, plus 18 holes of golf with cart for under $20, someone’s sure to lose their job!
As always, the registration forms for the Senior Appreciation Championship were gone quickly—almost as quickly as the golf season. So remember, if you’re going to be above the age of 55 at the beginning of October 2011, sign up early for the Senior Appreciation Championship at Taylor Meadows because it’s sure to sell-out.
