On July 30 th and July 31 st, 2011, Taylor Golf hosted the annual Taylor City Tournament. This tournament was threatening to be a repeat of last year’s soggy event. Heavy amounts of rain (five and a half inches, to be exact) fell upon both golf courses only days before the First Round at Taylor Meadows was scheduled to begin. The maintenance crews worked very hard to get both courses playable by the weekend. The tournament was pushed back three hours, the maintenance crews got their job done, and at 10:00 AM on July 30 th, the first tee shot of the tournament was hit under sunny and cloudless skies.
Dr. Mark Mann of Ann Arbor was able to shoot the low score of the day at Taylor Meadows, carding a 68. Jake Kieronski of Wyandotte carded a 71, and found himself trailing by three shots in second place overall after day one. Steve Neuman of Waterford shot a 72 and was also in striking distance for day two. The senior flight represented themselves very well, with Rick Morford of St. Clair Shores and Daniel Gregg of Ann Arbor shooting a 74 and 75, respectively. Heather Neuman of Woodhaven led the ladies with a 97 on day one, and held an eleven stroke lead after round one. Chris Bronis and Steve Weshalek, both Taylor residents, were our closest to the pin winners on day one, knocking both of their shots very close to the cup on holes six and twelve, respectively.
The perfect weather repeated itself for the final round at Lakes of Taylor on July 31st, and the players were challenged to put up another good score on day two in order to win their flights. Dr. Mann held off Steve Neuman’s back nine charge, which included a stretch of six holes in which he went 3-under, to be crowned the 2011 Men’s City Champion. His second day 79 and two day score of 147 edged out Neuman’s 76 and two day score of 148 by only one stroke. Steve Avery of Dearborn fired twin 75s and a two day score of 150 to finish only three strokes back. Jake Kieronski went 71-79 to finish at Avery’s mark of 150.
In the women’s flight, Heather Neuman never looked back, and won the women’s title by twenty-two strokes! In the senior’s championship flight, Daniel Gregg avenged his last year’s runner-up finish, and fired a 74 on the final day at Lakes to finish with a 149 and the senior’s crown was his. Rick Morford shot a 79 on the final day, and was the runner-up to Gregg, firing a two-day score of 152. David Mitchell won the men’s first flight with an impressive 75 on the second day and a two-day score of 154.
Ed Meredith and Mike Kobus both won the closest to the pin at Lakes of Taylor, hitting shots that very well could have been aces!
We would like to thank each and every participant in this year’s event. This year was a total success, and our customers are the reason that we do what we do! We hope to see each and every one of our competitors, plus many new faces, at our 2012 Taylor City Championship next year!
