The 2007 Taylor City Championship was held July 28 & 29. As in previous years, this tournament was a sell out. The qualifying round, held Saturday at Taylor Meadows, brought out a full field of 120 competitors and introduced them to something a little different from tournaments past…a shotgun start with carts; a change that was received well by most.
The Final Round took place Sunday, July 29 at the Lakes and started with 112 golfers teeing off in eight flights with some familiar names filling the top spots were Steve Avery (02 Champ) and Sean Habratowski (05 Champ) tied at 70, and Dave Mitchell (04 Champ) close behind with 71.
The Men’s Championship Flight came down to the 36th hole of the tournament-Lakes #9, where Steve Avery and Dave LeClaire, Jr. were tied for the top spot and Sean Habratowski was back by a stoke. Avery birdied the 9th and pulled ahead to claim the title, with Dave LeClaire, Jr. finishing Runner Up, and Sean Habratowski coming in a close third.
The Men’s First Flight was won by Chris Bronis with a two point spread over Runner up, Dan Bzura. The Men’s Second Flight was won by a scorecard play off between Michael McKay and Ryan Rickabaugh , with McKay coming out on top. The Men’s Third Flight 2006 Champion, Les Molnar, came in 4 strokes behind this year’s Champion, Gary Egbert. The Men’s Fourth Flight Champ Ken Bzura took his spot early in the game with an eagle on Lake’s #2 followed by a birdie on #3.
The Women’s Flight Champion is a familiar name as well, having been the 2004 & 2006 Women’s Flight Champ, Verna Jasieniecki pulled way ahead of the flight, with Runner-up Mary Lou Arnold (2006 Women’s First Flight Champ) coming in 30 stokes behind her.
2007 is the second year in a row that there were two Senior Flights. The Senior Champion Flight was tied in the beginning and the end and was then settled by a three-hole scorecard playoff between 2005 Senior Flight Champion, Ed Meredith and Jerry Reinstein, with Meredith coming out on top. The Senior First Flight Champion, Bernard Tockstein, started out the Final Round in second place, but finished three stokes ahead of Runner-up Bill Crova.
